Mangal Dosha — being “Manglik” — is formed when Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from your Lagna (ascendant) or Moon in the birth chart. It is traditionally associated with friction or delay in marriage. It is also widely considered cancellable or reducible — for example when both partners are Manglik, or through certain placements of Mars, Jupiter or the Moon — so being Manglik is rarely the obstacle it is feared to be.
What “Manglik” means
Mars (Mangal) is the planet of energy, drive and assertiveness. When it falls in specific houses counted from the ascendant or Moon, that fiery energy is traditionally said to put strain on close partnership — hence the long-standing custom of checking for it before marriage.
It is also called Kuja Dosha or Bhauma Dosha in different regions.

Classically, Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house — from the Lagna and often also from the Moon and from Venus — makes a chart Manglik. The 7th house (marriage) and 8th house (longevity of marriage) placements are given the most weight.

Tradition lists many conditions that neutralise or soften Mangal Dosha. The most common: both partners being Manglik (it is said to cancel out), Mars in its own sign or exalted, the involvement of Jupiter or the Moon, or Mars being aspected by benefics.
This is exactly why a careful chart reading matters more than the label — a “Manglik” verdict on its own says very little.
Is being Manglik bad?
