In one paragraph
In Vedic astrology, when someone asks "what is your rashi?" they mean the sign the Moon occupied when you were born — not the Sun. The Moon is used because it governs the mind and because it moves fast enough to be personal: it changes sign roughly every two and a quarter days. Your rashi decides how transits are read for you, underlies daily horoscopes in India, and — through the Moon's nakshatra — sets the starting point of your dasha cycle.
Why the Moon and not the Sun
The Sun spends about a month in each sign, so everyone born in that month shares a Sun sign. The Moon covers the same distance in about two and a quarter days. A Moon sign therefore narrows things down more than twelve times as finely — and on roughly two days out of every five the Moon changes sign at some point during the day, which is when the birth time starts to matter.
The Moon also has a specific meaning in Jyotish: it is manas, the mind — perception, emotion, memory and the sense of being at ease. Since experience is filtered through the mind, the tradition takes the Moon as the most direct indicator of how a life is actually felt from the inside.

What your rashi is used for
- Transits (gochar): the movement of planets is judged from the Moon sign. "Saturn is in the eighth from your Moon" is a statement made from the rashi.
- Sade Sati: the seven-and-a-half-year Saturn period is defined entirely by the Moon sign.
- Rashifal: the daily, weekly and yearly horoscopes published in India are written by Moon sign.
- Dasha: the Moon's nakshatra at birth decides which planetary period your life begins in.
- Marriage matching: all eight tests of Ashtakoot guna milan compare the two Moons.
- Naming: the traditional first syllable of a name comes from the Moon's nakshatra and pada.
Rashi, Sun sign and Lagna are three different things
| Item | What it is | Changes every | Describes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rashi (Moon sign) | Sign of the Moon at birth | About 2¼ days | Mind, emotions, instinctive responses |
| Sun sign | Sign of the Sun at birth | About 1 month | Vitality, identity, sense of purpose |
| Lagna | Sign rising in the east at birth | About 2 hours | Body, outward manner, the structure of the chart |
A person can easily have three different signs for these three points. None of them is "the real one" — they describe different layers, and a reading uses all three.
Why your Vedic Sun sign is usually one sign earlier
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, anchored to the fixed stars. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, anchored to the spring equinox. Because the equinox drifts slowly against the stars, the two zodiacs are now about 24° apart.
The practical effect is that most positions move back by one sign. If your Western Sun sign is Leo and you were born in the first three weeks of that sign, your Vedic Sun sign is Cancer. The same shift applies to the Moon and the Lagna.
What you need to find yours
On most days the date of birth alone is enough, because the Moon stays in one sign for over two days. On the days when the Moon changes sign, you also need the time and the place, since the change happens at one instant worldwide and falls at different local times.
The same applies with more force to the nakshatra. The Moon moves through one nakshatra in about a day, so a birth time is usually needed to be sure of it — and it is the nakshatra, not the rashi, that fixes your dasha.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I find my rashi?
- Your rashi is the sidereal sign the Moon was in at your birth. On most dates your birth date is enough; if the Moon changed sign that day you also need your birth time and place.
- Is rashi the same as zodiac sign?
- Rashi simply means sign, and there are twelve. But when people ask for "your rashi" in the Vedic context they mean your Moon sign, whereas "your zodiac sign" in the Western context means your Sun sign.
- Why is my rashi different from my Sun sign?
- They measure two different bodies. The Sun and Moon are in the same sign only around the new moon, so for most people the two differ. On top of that, the Vedic zodiac is about 24° behind the Western one.
- Can I read a horoscope by rashi and by Lagna?
- Yes, and astrologers do. Predictions published by rashi are read from the Moon. Reading the same transits from your Lagna shows which areas of life they activate. Results confirmed from both are the more dependable.
- Does the Moon sign change during life?
- No. Your janma rashi is fixed at birth. What changes is the transiting Moon, which passes through all twelve signs every month and colours the mood of individual days.
