Exalted, Debilitated and Own-Sign Planets: Planetary Dignity Explained

Published by Astronaad · Updated · 4 min read

In one paragraph

Dignity is the measure of how comfortable a planet is in the sign it occupies. Each planet has one sign where it is exalted (uccha) and works at its best, the opposite sign where it is debilitated (neecha) and struggles, and one or two signs it owns. Between those extremes lie friendly, neutral and enemy signs. Dignity does not decide what a planet does in your life — its house does that — but it decides how well it is able to do it.

The dignity table

Dignity of the seven visible planets
PlanetOwn sign(s)Exalted inDebilitated inMoolatrikona
SunLeoAries (deepest at 10°)Libra (deepest at 10°)Leo 0°–20°
MoonCancerTaurus (deepest at 3°)Scorpio (deepest at 3°)Taurus 3°–30°
MarsAries, ScorpioCapricorn (deepest at 28°)Cancer (deepest at 28°)Aries 0°–12°
MercuryGemini, VirgoVirgo (deepest at 15°)Pisces (deepest at 15°)Virgo 15°–20°
JupiterSagittarius, PiscesCancer (deepest at 5°)Capricorn (deepest at 5°)Sagittarius 0°–10°
VenusTaurus, LibraPisces (deepest at 27°)Virgo (deepest at 27°)Libra 0°–15°
SaturnCapricorn, AquariusLibra (deepest at 20°)Aries (deepest at 20°)Aquarius 0°–20°
Degrees follow Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra; a few later texts differ by a degree or two. Debilitation is always the sign opposite exaltation.

The ladder of strength

From strongest to weakest, a planet can be:

  • Exalted (uccha) — in its sign of greatest strength
  • In moolatrikona — a specific span of one of its own signs, nearly as strong
  • In its own sign (swakshetra)
  • In a friend's sign
  • In a neutral sign
  • In an enemy's sign
  • Debilitated (neecha) — in the sign opposite its exaltation

The exaltation and debilitation degrees in the table mark the peak. A planet is exalted anywhere in its exaltation sign, but strongest at the stated degree and gradually less so on either side of it.

What exaltation and debilitation really mean

An exalted planet expresses its nature cleanly. Exalted Jupiter gives judgment and generosity; exalted Saturn gives patience and fairness. A debilitated planet has the same nature with less control over it: debilitated Mars has plenty of drive and poor aim; a debilitated Moon feels everything and steadies slowly.

Neither is a verdict. An exalted planet ruling difficult houses can deliver those difficult themes very efficiently, and a debilitated planet in an upachaya house often produces someone who works hard for results that others are handed.

Neecha bhanga: when debilitation is cancelled

Classical texts list conditions under which a debilitated planet recovers, known as neecha bhanga. The commonly applied ones are:

  • The lord of the sign in which the planet is debilitated is in a kendra from the Lagna or the Moon
  • The planet that would be exalted in that sign is in a kendra from the Lagna or the Moon
  • The debilitated planet is joined or aspected by the lord of its sign
  • The debilitated planet is exalted in the Navamsa chart

When cancellation is strong, the result is sometimes called neecha bhanga raja yoga: an early struggle in that planet's area followed by marked success in it.

Combustion: too close to the Sun

A planet very near the Sun is lost in its glare and is called combust (asta). It keeps its house placement but loses some of its independence — its affairs become bound up with the Sun's.

Combustion: how close to the Sun counts
PlanetCombust within
Mercury14° of the Sun
Venus10° of the Sun
Mars17° of the Sun
Jupiter11° of the Sun
Saturn15° of the Sun
These are the orbs Astronaad's chart engine applies. Some authorities use slightly tighter orbs for Mercury and Venus when they are retrograde.

Other sources of strength

Sign dignity is the first of several measures. Directional strength (dig bala) rewards Jupiter and Mercury in the 1st house, the Sun and Mars in the 10th, Saturn in the 7th, and the Moon and Venus in the 4th. A planet in the same sign in both the birth chart and the Navamsa is vargottama and gains stability. A retrograde planet is counted as strong in motion.

Rahu and Ketu are a special case. They own no signs, and the classical authorities disagree about where they are exalted. Astronaad follows one widely used convention: Rahu exalted in Taurus and Ketu in Scorpio.

Frequently asked questions

What does an exalted planet mean in a kundli?
It means the planet is in the sign where it functions most strongly and cleanly. It can deliver the results of the houses it rules and occupies with relative ease — though which results those are still depends on the houses involved.
Is a debilitated planet always bad?
No. Debilitation weakens a planet's control, not its presence. Many charts have the debilitation cancelled (neecha bhanga), and a debilitated planet in a growth house often shows results earned through persistent effort.
What is moolatrikona?
A defined span of degrees within one of a planet's own signs where it is stronger than in the rest of that sign — second only to exaltation. For example the Sun is in moolatrikona in the first 20° of Leo.
What is a combust planet?
A planet close enough to the Sun to be hidden by its light. Astronaad's chart engine treats a planet as combust within these distances of the Sun: Mercury 14°, Venus 10°, Mars 17°, Jupiter 11°, Saturn 15°.
Where are Rahu and Ketu exalted?
The classical texts do not agree. One widely used convention, which Astronaad follows, places Rahu's exaltation in Taurus and Ketu's in Scorpio; other schools use Gemini and Sagittarius.
