The Panchang (पंचांग, “five limbs”) is the traditional Hindu almanac. Its five limbs — tithi (lunar day), nakshatra (lunar mansion), yoga, karana and vara (weekday) — are derived from the real positions of the Sun and Moon and the local sunrise, and together they tell you what the day favours and which windows to avoid. What “five limbs” really means
The Sanskrit word Panchang (panch + ang) is literally “five-limbed”. Those five “limbs” are five separate astronomical quantities that, together, describe the qualitative shape of a day. They don’t cause anything; they describe the state of the sky and the lunar rhythm at sunrise. The Vedic tradition uses that description to time activities: an auspicious tithi for a wedding, an auspicious nakshatra for travel, a clean karana for a contract, and so on.
Crucially, the Panchang is computed from real astronomy — not a cycle of arbitrary names. We find the actual longitude of the Sun and the Moon for the date and place, apply the classical 360°-based geometry, and read out the five values. There is no opinion involved in the computation; the only modelling choice is the sidereal frame (India universally uses the Lahiri ayanamsa).
The five angas, one by one
1. Tithi — Lunar day
30 per lunar monthThe angular distance from the Sun to the Moon, divided into 30 steps of 12°. Each tithi has a name (Pratipada, Dwitiya, … Purnima/Amavasya) and a paksha — bright (Shukla, waxing Moon) or dark (Krishna, waning Moon). Because the Moon's speed varies, each tithi has its own precise length — not exactly 24 hours.
2. Nakshatra — Lunar mansion
27 around the zodiacThe 27 segments of the zodiac (each 13°20' wide) through which the Moon passes in its ~27.3-day sidereal cycle. Each nakshatra has a ruling deity and a planetary lord (in the Vimshottari Dasha sequence), and is subdivided into 4 padas of 3°20' each.
3. Yoga — Sun+Moon combo
27 named yogasThe combined sidereal longitude of the Sun and the Moon (sum modulo 360°), divided into 27 equal segments. The 27 yogas (Vishkambha, Priti, Ayushman, … Vaidhriti) describe the qualitative "weather" of the day. Several yogas (e.g. Vaidhriti, Vyatipata) are themselves considered inauspicious.
4. Karana — Half-tithi
11 karanas, 60 per monthExactly half a tithi. Seven karanas (Bava, Balava, Kaulava, Taitila, Gara, Vanija, Vishti) cycle 8 times each through a lunar month, and 4 fixed karanas (Shakuni, Chatushpada, Naga, Kimstughna) appear once each around new moon. Vishti karana (Bhadra) is widely considered inauspicious.
5. Vara — Weekday
7 (planetary)The familiar seven-day week, each day ruled by a planet — Sunday (Sun), Monday (Moon), Tuesday (Mars), Wednesday (Mercury), Thursday (Jupiter), Friday (Venus), Saturday (Saturn). The weekday governs which slot of the day is Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika Kaal.
How the Panchang is computed
The classical method, applied to a given date and city:
- Find the exact sunrise for the city from a real astronomical ephemeris.
- At that sunrise instant, compute the sidereal longitudes of the Sun and the Moon (Lahiri ayanamsa).
- Tithi: (Moon − Sun) modulo 360, divided by 12. The integer part 0–14 is the Shukla tithi 1–15; 15–29 is the Krishna 1–15.
- Nakshatra: Moon’s sidereal longitude divided by (360 ÷ 27 = 13°20′). The integer part 0–26 is the nakshatra. The remainder gives the pada (1–4).
- Yoga: (Sun + Moon) modulo 360, divided by (360 ÷ 27).
- Karana: half a tithi — divide the Moon − Sun longitude by 6° and apply the 7-movable + 4-fixed sequence.
- Vara: the weekday of that sunrise in the local timezone.
- Binary-search the angas’ end times — the next instant each anga changes — for the “till HH:MM” labels.
Astronaad does all of this live for every city we cover, accurate to the minute — so today’s tithi for Mumbai is not assumed to be the same as today’s tithi for New York (which it sometimes isn’t, especially near sunrise tithi transitions).
How to read a Panchang in practice
A typical day on the Panchang gives you three useful things at a glance:
- The flavour of the day — which tithi (auspicious vs. avoid: e.g. Amavasya, Chaturdashi avoid for starts), which nakshatra (gentle/mild vs. sharp), which yoga (a few yogas like Vaidhriti or Vyatipata are noted to avoid).
- The windows of the day — sunrise, sunset, the inauspicious Rahu Kaal / Yamaganda / Gulika, and the auspicious Abhijit Muhurat around midday.
- The detailed sub-tables — Choghadiya day & night, the running tithi/nakshatra end times, and special observances if any.

- Why does the Panchang differ from city to city?
- Because the angas are anchored to the local sunrise — which changes with latitude, longitude and date. A panchang computed for Ujjain (the historical zero-meridian of Indian astronomy) is not exact for New York. Each city has its own sunrise, sunset, Rahu Kaal, Choghadiya windows and even — rarely — a different tithi at sunrise.
